"Future" parliamentary bloc head MP Fouad Siniora urged the moderate Arabs to shoulder the responsibility of implementing religious reforms in the region and come out with important initiatives.

Siniora's words came during a lecture entitled "The Rising Middle East: Dangers and opportunities" that he gave at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in Boston.

Siniora said that amid the deterioration of the economic growth that the world is facing, the Middle East -- due to its immense resources --could be an important source for the world economic growth; however, this would demand support from the international community and more economic cooperation in the region to distribute the resources in a better and more effective way.

Siniora also said that history was unjust to the Arabs as they have suffered and paid for the mistakes that Europe committed during the past century; mistakes which created the Palestinian's crisis, "a crisis which is considered the source of most of the evil in the region."

Siniora pointed out that currently a re-schemed plan for the rising Middle East is being set and its history is being stamped by blood, destruction and sufferings, indicating that stability seems unreachable at the current stage after the revolution in Tunisia and Egypt as armed extremists constitute a real threat to security, growth and development as well.

He underscored that the Middle East region has been suffering continuously since the foundation of the state of Israel and the continuous "Nakba" of the Palestinian refugees and the Israeli occupation of the West Bank, saying that the western forces had plaid a major role in causing the Arabs most of their anguish which led to the current crises in the region.

Siniora accused the western players of abandoning their moral and political roles and of supporting, whether directly or indirectly, the military systems in the region which in turn have used and supported extremists to blackmail the west as well as the minorities and moderates in the Arab world.

He stressed the importance of implementing serious religious reforms in the region which allows a correct and better understanding of the real spirit of Islam which calls for mercy, forgiveness and acceptance of the other.

Siniora said "we are all in the same boat; the ongoing incidents in Asia, Europe and the United States and the increase of terrorism all over the world (...) demand from us all to share the burden and agree on a strategy to be adopted on both International and regional levels, "in order to find real solutions for the basic problems in the region starting from that of Palestine and to efficiently fight world extremism.

"The Rising Middle East is a fact; however, we are to decide whether it would be a source of exporting extremism or a spring for growth and prosperity; whether it will be categorized as a region of dangers or a region full of opportunities," Siniora concluded.
